O for Oman: Slippery Tales
“We’re moving to Oman,” announces my maid, clearly excited.
“But why?” I am flabbergasted. I am one of those women who find my maid way more precious than my husband. The only other thing more difficult than finding a good maid in Mumbai, is finding a good house. Needless to say, I try to get to the root of the decision.
“Didi, you don’t have to pay income tax there,” she says.
“You don’t pay income tax here!” I exclaim, almost choking on my coffee.
She is silent for a second. Then comes up with her second argument.
“Mohan, my neighbour, has been there. He said you don’t have to tip the people in hotels. So much money saving, Didi,” she remarks.
“Do you tip here?” I ask, a rhetorical question.
She goes silent again.
“What do you plan to do there?”
“Mohan says people who work with oil can make good money. Raghu works with oil, Didi.”
I sigh. Such naivete. Her husband Raghu offers head oil massages to vagabonds at the local beach.
LOL.. that last line …hahaha . That was ekdum nicely put. And I loved the “questions” ..tax..tips ..huh !!… Deepa I am loving the way you build characters in few lines 🙂 – AA
The questions are so cheeky, no 😀 Thanks man, Anuya! 🙂
Haha! Loved it. Yet another good read Deepa. Would definitely have to consider this as an option soon 🙂
😀 From gas into oil, seems like a well planned move!
Laughing loud and thoroughly relate this to recent times.. Perfect mix and match stories,so very much suits to AtoZ:)
😀 Glad you enjoyed! Thank you Parul!
Very funny….just laughed out loud…good one…would love to go to Oman to evade Taxcut…hehehe
😀 So, when are we going? 😉
Arey yaar, she is asking for pay hike with her naivete sounding (smart) act … pagaar badhao madam 🙂 …jokes apart, hatsoff to your excellent narrative writing skill. It is always enjoyable to read. Its like taking a short dip in a well and get an experience of deep ocean.
Aah, now that’s an angle I didn’t realize she could play 😉 On the narration and posts, thank you for that boost, Hitendra!
Deepa, I too felt if the couple get stuck while dreaming big. For me this slippery tale was an emotional one thinking the bad outcome. In few words, you have expressed it very well.
Yes, unfortunately, that happens so very often too – the pull of easy money has trapped quite a few. Hopefully this one has a happy ending! Thanks Jatinder! 🙂
Ignorance is bliss…poor couple, far from reality
And that’s how sometimes they end up going from the hot ‘oil’ into the fire!
Hahaha… I’ve seen a movie called “Take Off” that’s about nurses stranded on the middle east… it’s not easy, less taxes or otherwise… dont know about safety in Oman though
Oh I can imagine. Some of the horror stories that come through. But by and large, mostly happy folks settled there!
Hahahahaha
Funny one there. I'll certainly laugh out loud if i ever hear someone offer me a Maaaalissss….
LOL! Thanks Shreya, glad you enjoyed this 😀
Naivete is sometimes a bliss and sometimes dangerous
I agree! Most times, it leaves you peaceful though!

Bikram's
Aur nahi to kya! I was googling Oman images and it did throw up some nice royal beach pictures. Rich Omanis would definitely need elite treatment! How’s you been! Back to blogging?
Omg haha I thought he is working with some oil company…
I have heard about lot of incidences where poor people get Stuck there, they loose their passport and they do not have enough contacts to come back to their land!
Heheheh, just a naive poor couple dreaming big! 😀 Yeah, there sure have been quite a few horror tales of that sort originating from the Gulf!
