K for Kazakhstan: Koffee Tales

She stood gingerly at the take out counter of Starbucks, stirring her latte. Even as her initial reservations about Farhan had given way to mild curiosity, she wasn’t sure how she could be expected to approve or reject the alliance on the basis of a fifteen minute conversation.

As Farhan’s coffee was being readied, she silently counted down the minutes to leave.
“Pass me some sugar?” he asked, bringing her out of her reverie.
“How many?”
“Hmm, I like it sweet.” he said with a smile, setting the cup of coffee in front of her.

She glanced at him for a long minute and then taking a deep breath, began emptying packet after packet of sugar in his cup as if daring him to stop her. To her surprise, the expressions on his face flitted from gratitude, to curiosity to absolute amusement. As she emptied the tenth packet of brown sugar into his drink, the boyish face broke into an ear-to-ear grin.“Whoa! How did you know I like my tea so sweet! I don’t remember ever telling you that I spent time in and adore Kazakhstan?!”
